About BEACON

During October 2021, the Research Grants Program along with the Technology Transfer Office launched the BEACON platform. BEACON is a centralized platform that collects, displays, analyzes, and reports on all academic activity taking place on the island. The collection of this data is very useful for researchers and their institutions, as it will help to unite efforts between different researchers and institutions, both public and private.

Each researcher will have a complete profile that will be accessible to potential collaborators. Sometimes, local and/or international organizations are looking for people with specific expertise for collaborations and specific research projects, but do not have a centralized platform where they can search for all the research talent in Puerto Rico. Thus, this platform will have this information available and accessible in one place, facilitating the search and collaboration in our scientific ecosystem.

Benefits

  • A centralized platform for collecting, analyzing, and reporting on all academic and research activities in Puerto Rico.
  • Improved data and tools enabling assessment of research strengths and planning for growth.
  • Increases collaborations between public and private Academic Institutions, researchers, companies and/or potential investors.

Features

  • Every day, BEACON searches online bibliographic databases automatically to find new publications and output data for each researcher.
  • BEACON also allows researchers to manually add publications and research outputs.
  • Researchers are welcome to update BEACON with additional information to populate their Profile, such as education, position, professional & teaching activities
  • Administration staff can request reports and analytics with punctual data from their institutions.

Publication search / data sources

BEACON automatically harvests publications and other research output information from the following online bibliographic databases:

  • arXiv
  • CiNii EN
  • CrossRef
  • DBLP
  • Europe PubMed Central
